Learn how to clean, store, and maintain your pistol case to protect your firearm and extend the life of the leather and canvas materials.
Quick answer
To keep your pistol case functional, clean the exterior with a damp cloth, condition the leather sparingly, and store it in a dry, climate-controlled area away from direct sunlight.
Why regular care matters for your pistol case
A pistol case is more than a carrying bag—it protects your firearm from dust, moisture, and impacts. Without routine care, the leather can dry out, the canvas can fray, and the zipper can stick, reducing the case's ability to do its job.
The King Ranch Pistol Case - Small uses water-resistant Armstrong canvas backed with Cordura® fabric and Latigo leather trim. These materials are durable but need specific handling to stay in top shape.
How to care for your pistol case in 5 steps
- Empty the case and shake out debris: Remove your pistol and any accessories. Turn the case upside down and gently shake to dislodge dust, lint, or loose particles from the faux shearling lining. Use a soft brush or a vacuum with a brush attachment for stubborn debris. Check the interior for small objects that could scratch your firearm.
- Clean the exterior canvas: Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water (do not soak). Wipe the Armstrong canvas and Cordura® fabric in the direction of the weave. Avoid rubbing the Latigo leather trim—if it gets wet, blot it dry immediately with a separate cloth. Never use harsh detergents or bleach; they can strip the water-resistant coating.
- Condition the leather trim sparingly: Apply a small amount of leather conditioner (designed for Latigo or similar oil-tanned leather) to a soft cloth. Rub it into the leather trim in a thin, even layer. Let it absorb for 10–15 minutes, then buff off any excess with a dry cloth. Less is more—over-conditioning can make the leather sticky or attract dirt.
- Lubricate the brass zipper: Apply a tiny drop of zipper lubricant or beeswax to a cotton swab and run it along the zipper teeth. Open and close the zipper a few times to distribute the lubricant. Wipe away any excess with a dry cloth. Do not use oil-based lubricants; they can stain the canvas or leather over time.
- Store the case properly: Keep the case in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity. Avoid storing it in a vehicle trunk or damp basement. If you need to store it for a long period, place a silica gel packet inside to control moisture. Never store the case with the firearm inside for extended periods—use it only for transport.
